SAG Award nominations: Three Billboards and Stranger Things dominate film and television categories

The Oscar race is beginning to take shape this week after the Golden Globes unveiled their nominees on Monday. Now the Screen Actor’s Guild have offered their group of contenders with several films AND actors getting major boosts in the race for that elusive golden statue.

Leading the way is Martin McDonagh’s comic-drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which is up for four gongs including the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast award. Main star Frances McDormand is up for Best Actress with co-stars Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell both nodded in Best Supporting Actor.

The family comedy Lady Bird is the other standout nominee with three mentions for Outstanding Performance by a Cast as well as acting nominations for Saoirse Ronan (Best Actress) and Laurie Metcalf (Best Supporting Actress).

The rest of the Outstanding Performance by a Cast lineup is completed by the indie comedy The Big Sick, the psychological thriller Get Out and the race-relations drama Mudbound.

Elsewhere, British actresses Dame Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul) and Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) are both contesting in Best Actress along with the previously-mentioned Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Frances McDormand (Three Billboards) plus Australian beauty Margot Robbie (I, Tonya).

In Best Supporting Actor, Three Billboards duo Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell are up against surprise nominee Steve Carell (Battle of the Sexes) and veterans Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) and Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water).

Finally, the Best Supporting Actress lineup sees Laurie Metcalf competing with fellow experienced names like Allison Janney (I, Tonya) and Holly Hunter (The Big Sick) plus Asian performer Hong Chau (Downsizing) and pop star Mary J. Blige (Mudbound).

There were several surprise omissions from this year’s nominees with Steven Spielberg’s The Post completely ignored while the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread), Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water) were all overlooked.
