SAG Award nominations: Manchester by the Sea up for four awards

With Christmas just a couple of weeks away, it looks as though several Oscar contenders will be enjoying the upcoming holidays even more following the reveal of this year’s SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) Award nominations.

After a strong showing from the Golden Globes on Monday, Kenneth Lonergan’s indie-drama Manchester by the Sea leads the way with four nods including the crucial Outstanding Ensemble Cast gong. Oscar frontrunner Casey Affleck is once again nominated in Best Actor with co-stars Lucas Hedges and Michelle Williams recognised in Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively.

The film stars Affleck as a Boston janitor who becomes sole guardian of his teenage nephew and decides to confront his troubled past at his old hometown.

Two films about race and conflict share joint-second in the nomination tally with the coming-of-age drama Moonlight and Denzel Washington’s Fences both picking up three nods each. Like Manchester, the films are up for Outstanding Ensemble Cast along with the NASA-based biopic Hidden Figures and the family dramedy Captain Fantastic.

However Oscar favourite La La Land failed to make that particular category though stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone both scooped key acting mentions.

Affleck, Gosling and Washington are both competing for Best Actor along with Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and British performer Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge). In Best Actress, Emma Stone and Natalie Portman (Jackie) go up against Hollywood favourites Amy Adams (Arrival) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) as well as shock nominee Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train).

In the Supporting categories, Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Lucas Hedges are battling it out with Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and British duo Hugh Grant (Florence Foster) and Dev Patel in the male group. The female nominees are a repeat of the Golden Globe lineup with Michelle Williams and the favourite Viola Davis (Fences) taking on Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Nicole Kidman (Lion) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).

The SAG Awards will take place on 29th January 2017.
