With music-based biopics for Madonna, Dusty Springfield and Whitney Houston on the horizon, Robbie Williams is set to be the next prolific musician to get the big-screen treatment.
The multi-award winning singer-songwriter and entertainer is to have his life story be turned into a film with Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) on hand to direct and co-write.
Williams shot to fame with the popular boyband Take That before a wildly successful and occasionally rocky solo career that has included hit songs like “Angels”, “Let Me Entertain You”, “Millennium”, “Rock DJ”, “Feel” and “Something Beautiful”.
Gracey describes Williams’s story as a “superhero narrative” and also confirmed that the eighteen-time BRIT awards winner will re-record his songs to match the film’s emotional arc.
“All Robbie’s songs will be resung, for the emotion of the moment. If in his life he’s in the depths of despair, he’s not going to sing a song as cabaret flamboyant showmanship; it’s going to be broken, a cappella, stripped down, because that’s where he is emotionally. In moments of pure joy, you’ll get songs sung in this whirlwind of hysteria.”
As recent biopics ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ (2018) and ‘Rocketman‘ (2019) dealt with Freddie Mercury and Elton John, this film will also tackle Williams’ personal life which includes his battle with depression and substance misuse issues.
