Peaky Blinders to end with sixth and final series

After several years of violent antics, newboy flat caps and diverse Brummie accents, Peaky Blinders is set to conclude with its sixth and final series.

The BBC confirmed the hit drama’s terminus on Monday, when announcing that it had resumed production under strict COVID guidelines.

Creator and writer Steven Knight also revealed the programme’s early ending via a statement:

“’Peaky’ is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

The last line of the statement does indicate that a potential spinoff is on the cards though as to whom it will focus on remains to be seen.

The drama follows the story of gangster Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his notorious family’s rise to power against the backdrop of working class, post-WWI Birmingham.

Back in 2019, Knight initially said that a seventh series was already on the cards.

However, the pandemic’s impact had resulted in a year’s delay in production which is likely to have accelerated plans to wrap with S6. As things stand, the final series is likely to air between late 2021 and early 2022 depending on how quickly production can complete filming.

Since debuting on BBC Two in 2013, Blinders has garnered a strong fanbase as well as critical acclaim. It has also scored four BAFTA wins which included the coveted Best Drama Series prize in 2018.

Cillian Murphy is set to return for the now-final series alongside long-serving co-stars Paul Anderson (Arthur), Helen McCrory (Aunt Polly), Sophie Rundle (Ada) and Finn Cole (Michael Gray).

High-profile stars like Tom Hardy (Alfie Solomon) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Gina Gray) are also set to return with Joe Cole, Sam Neill, Annabelle Wallis, Charlotte Riley, Paddy Considine, Adrien Brody, Aidan Gillen and Sam Claflin amongst the other big names to have made an impact on the show.
