Olivia Colman struggles to get through to dementia-suffering father Anthony Hopkins in The Father trailer

As two of Britain’s most established actors, Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, The Remains of the Day, The Two Popes) and Olivia Colman (Broadchurch, The Favourite, The Crown) have garnered an impressive haul of awards between themselves including seven BAFTAs, four Golden Globes and of course, two Academy Awards.

That success looks likely to continue with their upcoming film The Father which has been adapted from the stage to the big-screen by original playwright Florian Zeller.

An official trailer for the drama has been unveiled and promises plenty of emotional scenes between the pair.

The plot centres on Anthony (Hopkins), an ageing man suffering with dementia who refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Colman). As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.

The rest of the film’s cast includes Rufus Sewell (Victoria, The Man in the High Castle), Olivia Williams (An Education, The Ghost Writer), Imogen Poots (Need for Speed, The Look of Love) and Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who).

The Father is set for release in the UK on 8 January 2021.
