Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor-Johnson to helm Fifty Shades of Grey film

After making her directional breakthrough with the musical biopic Nowhere Boy in 2009, Sam Taylor-Johnson has managed to land herself a major gig involving one of the most talked-about books.

After months of speculation, author EL James has announced via Twitter that Taylor-Johnson will helm the big-screen adaptation of her best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

“I’m delighted & thrilled to let you guys know that Sam Taylor-Johnson has agreed to direct the film of Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Taylor-Johnson, who is married to her leading star from Nowhere Boy Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass, Anna Karenina) also gave her reaction to the news.

“I am excited to be charged with the evolution of Fifty Shades of Grey from page to screen. For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honour the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the recent phenomenon, the story focuses on a college student named Anastasia who embarks on a passionate affair with a mysterious businessman named Christian Grey.

While the director has now been sorted for the film, speculation continues to rumble on about who will play the two lovers with Ian Somerhalder (Lost, The Vampire Diaries), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Magic Mike) and Emma Watson (Harry Potter series) amongst those linked with it.

No date has yet been given for the film’s release.
