Mowgli encounters Baloo the Bear and Shere Khan in first trailer for Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book

Following up my earlier article about Disney’s plans to make a Mary Poppins sequel, the company have been busy with developing live-action adaptions of some of their beloved animated classics ranging from Sleeping Beauty to Cinderella.

The latest film to be on the receiving end of a new take is the 1968 favourite, The Jungle Book. That particular Disney outing was famed for beloved songs such as “Bare Necessities” and “I Wanna Be Like You”.

Helmed by Jon Favreau (Elf, Iron Man), the first preview for the family adventure has premiered online.

Based on the acclaimed novel from Rudyard Kipling, the film tells the story of a young boy who is raised by wolves in the jungle. However, he finds himself trying to survive the threat of a terrifying tiger whilst making friends with a black panther and a wise bear.

Newcomer Neel Sethi plays the role of the man cub and is aided by a strong vocal cast which includes Bill Murray (Ghostbusters, Lost in Translation) as Baloo the Bear, Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler’s List) as Bagheera, Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther) as Shere Khan, Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter, Pulp Fiction) as King Louie, Scarlett Johansson (Lucy, The Avengers: Age of Ultron) as Kaa, Lupita N’yongo (12 Years a Slave, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) as Raksha and Giancarlo Esposito (Do the Right Thing, Breaking Bad) as Akela.

The Jungle Book will be released in cinemas in April 2016.

Coincidentally, Warner Bros are currently working on a second big-screen adaption of Kipling’s classic with Andy Serkis, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Benedict Cumberbatch amongst the high-profile stars contributing their voices.
