Millie Bobby Brown comes up against Godzilla in Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer

Back in 2014, one of cinema’s greatest monsters made a worthy comeback to the big-screen as Godzilla caused havoc in his ‘comeback’ role.

Now the prehistoric sea reptile is back for a follow-up film which sees him take on other formidable opponents alongside a talented ‘human’ cast.

Entitled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the upcoming sequel premiered its official trailer at San Diego Comic-Con last night.

Directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus), the plot sees a teenage girl and her mother being kidnapped by a shady group as they find themselves in contact with Godzilla. However humanity is soon threatened by the arrival of sinister creatures Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed King Ghidorah as they seek world domination.

Having tackled terrifying creatures in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, Emmy award-nominated starlet Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) tackles the lead role of teenager Madison Russell with Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Bates Motel) playing her scientist mother.

Other notable cast members for the film include Kyle Chandler (King Kong, The Wolf of Wall Street), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, Get Out), Charles Dance (Last Action Hero, Game of Thrones), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley, Tag), O’Shea Jackson Jnr (Straight Outta Compton) and Zhi Zhang (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha).

There are also returns for two actors from the first film which are Sally Hawkins (Dr. Vivienne Duncan) and Ken Watanabe (Dr. Ishiro Serizawa). However, fellow original stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen are not involved in this outing despite their key roles in Godzilla.

The film will also set up the hugely anticipated Godzilla vs Kong which will begin production later this year.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be released in the UK on May 31st 2019.
