Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp return to Underland in Alice Through the Looking Glass trailer

Five years ago, visionary director Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow) decided to tackle the beloved Lewis Carroll novel Alice in Wonderland with his own big-screen adaption.

But while the film grossed over $1 billion worldwide, it received disappointing reviews which led to Burton choosing to pass on directing the sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass. That role has now been occupied by British director James Bobin (Da Ali G Show, The Muppets) with his predecessor taking up producing duties.

A large majority of the fantasy adventure’s original cast have returned for the sequel including lead actress Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Crimson Peak) as the young heroine Alice and Johnny Depp (Sleepy Hollow, Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) as The Mad Hatter.

The pair are both seen in the film’s official trailer which has premiered online.

Based on another of Carroll’s stories, the plot sees Alice return to the fantasy world of Underland and go back in time in order to save the Hatter from a new enemy.

Other original stars returning include Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen while Michael Sheen (White Rabbit), Alan Rickman (Blue Caterpillar), Timothy Spall (Bayard), Paul Whitehouse (March Hare), Barbara Windsor (Dormouse) and Stephen Fry (Cheshire Cat) are all back to provide voices for their respective characters.

Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Les Miserables), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I), Lindsay Duncan (Le-Weekend, Birdman) and Andrew Scott (Pride, Spectre) are the new additions to the strong cast.

Alice Through the Looking Glass will hit cinemas on May 26th 2016.
