Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks confront the US government over the Pentagon Papers in official trailer for Steven Spielberg’s The Post

For a lot of film audiences, a project involving legendary director Steven Spielberg (Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Bridge of Spies) and beloved actors Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks sounds like the perfect cinematic team. That’s because it is in fact, a reality!

The multi-awarding trio have collaborated on a new film which focuses on one of the most controversial periods in American history that left many people distrustful of their government from then on.

Entitled The Post, the political drama has premiered its official trailer online.

Set in the early 1970s, the story centres on the true events surrounding the leak of the Pentagon Papers as Washington Times publisher Kay Graham (Streep) and her editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) challenge the American government over the Pentagon Papers which contained classified documents in relation to the Vietnam War and spanned four U.S presidents.

Streep (Sophie’s Choice, The Iron Lady, Florence Foster Jenkins) and Hanks (Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan) are joined in the film by an exceptionally-large support cast which includes Alison Brie (Mad Men, Glow), Carrie Coon (The Leftovers, Fargo), David Cross (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Arrested Development), Bruce Greenwood (Thirteen Days, Star Trek), Tracy Letts (Homeland, Divorce), Bob Odenkirk (Nebraska, Better Call Saul), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, The People vs. O.J. Simpson), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Fargo), Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters, The Americans), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Boardwalk Empire), Bradley Whitford (The West Wing, Get Out), David Costabile (Breaking Bad, Lincoln), Deirdrie Lovejoy (The Wire, The Blacklist) and Zach Woods (In the Loop, Silicon Valley).

As if this excellent cast wasn’t enough to wet your appetite, the film’s music will be composed by the legendary John Williams (Jaws, Indiana Jones series, Star Wars saga) as he teams up with longtime collaborator Spielberg once again.

Touted as a potential Oscar contender, The Post will be released in the UK on January 19th 2018.
