Lion cub Simba learns his destiny in new trailer for live-action Lion King film

For Lion King fans, it’s time to be prepared.

2019 is already bracing itself to be a mega year for Disney with two sequels and THREE live-action adaptations of previous animated classics. So far Dumbo has performed well at the box-office while Aladdin is just round the corner. The studio are now spoiling us even more with a new take on the much-loved 1994 hit The Lion King.

The excitement for the film is now set to go up following the release of a new full-length trailer which bolsters an excellent voice cast and plenty of nostalgia for fans of the original…

Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungle Book), the familiar plot centres on a young lion cub named Simba who is destined to become the future King of Pride Rock. But when tragedy strikes, he finds himself fleeing, only to return home years later as he vows to fulfil his destiny.

Donald Glover (Atlanta, Solo: A Star Wars Story) provides the voice of the adult Simba, with original Lion King legend James Earl Jones reprising his role as Simba’s wise father Mufasa.

Additionally, Beyoncé Knowles provides the vocals of the adult Nala with other stand out names being Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Doctor Strange) as the sinister Scar and Alfre Woodard (Primal Fear, 12 Years a Slave) as Simba’s mother Sarabi.

Youngsters JD McCrary (Teachers) and Shahadi Wright Joseph (Hairspray Live!) will both be voicing the child versions of Simba and Nala respectively with the rest of the cast including Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Pineapple Express) as warthog Pumbaa, Billy Eichner (Parks and Recreation, The Angry Birds Movie) as meerkat Timon, John Oliver (The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) as the uptight hornbill Zazu, John Kani (Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther) as the wise mandrill Rafiki and Eric Andre (2 Broke Girls, Man Seeking Woman), Florence Kasumba (Wonder Woman, Black Panther) and Keegan-Michael Key (MADtv, BoJack Horseman) as Scar’s hyena minions Azizi, Shenzi and Kamari.

Loyal fans of the original animation will be further delighted to know that composer Hans Zimmer is back to do the film’s score, while Sir Elton John AND Beyoncé are teaming up to provide the film’s beloved songs.

The Lion King will be released in cinemas on July 19th 2019.
