Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg to helm Pirates of the Caribbean 5

A decade after drunkenly strolling onto our screens in his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Johnny Depp is set to return as the flamboyant pirate in a fifth film which has finally found its director (or directors!).

Deadline have confirmed that Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will direct the upcoming sequel of the action-adventure franchise after beating off competition from Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman).

Despite their lack of Hollywood experience, the pair were responsible for directing the Oscar-nominated Norwegian adventure Kon-Tiki (2012) which was also set at sea.

Disney, Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer all accepted them as the preferable choice to make the fifth installment with production set to begin in late 2013/early 2014.

The film is scheduled for release on July 10th 2015.
