Johnny Depp is uploaded through artificial intelligence in official trailer for Transendence

Johnny Depp’s film career has been somewhat average lately particularly with his recent critical flops like Dark Shadows and The Lone Ranger.

But despite criticism from those naysayers, his latest film Transcendence is set to go down down a different route that could help Depp recapture his acting talent outside of playing shtick characters.

The official trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller premiered earlier today.

Produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception) and directed by his collaborated cinematographer-turned-debutant filmmaker Wally Pfister, the bizarre plot sees Depp play Dr. Will Caster, a renowned artificial intelligence researcher who becomes obsessed with creating a sentient machine. However his experiments are complicated by anti-technology extremists who try to prevent his machine from becoming a full-scale reality.

Depp is supported in the film by Rebecca Hall (The Town, Iron Man 3), Paul Bettany (A Knight’s Tale, Master and Commander), Kate Mara (House of Cards) and regular Nolan actors Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption, Dark Knight trilogy) and Cillian Murphy (Inception, Peaky Blinders).

The film will be released in the UK on 25th April 2014.
