Jodie Comer to play Empress Joséphine opposite Joaquin Phoenix’s Napoleon in Ridley Scott’s Kitbag

Following the recent news that her hit series Killing Eve would be concluding next year, Jodie Comer has stepped up her bid to make it as a film star with a new project.

The BAFTA and Emmy award-winning star of My Mad Fat Diary, Talking Heads and the upcoming Free Guy has officially landed the lucrative role of Empress Joséphine in the historical drama Kitbag.

The film sees Jodie quickly reunite with veteran director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator) after the pair recently worked together on another historical flick, The Last Duel.

Furthermore, she will be working alongside Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Walk the Line) who has been cast as French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. This is Joaquin’s first major project since winning the Best Actor Oscar for his lauded performance as Arthur Fleck in the comic-book drama Joker (2019).

The film will focus on the volatile relationship between Napoleon and Joséphine prior to his ruthless climb to Emperor in the 19th century.

There is an air of controversy about Jodie’s casting owing to the fact that she is 18 years younger than her experienced co-star whereas in real-life, Joséphine was several years older than Napoleon.

Nevertheless, the role is a baity one that will hopefully lead to more success for her.

Production is likely to commence after Jodie concludes filming her memorable role as Villanelle in Killing Eve’s fourth and final series.
