Jack Nicholson to make big-screen comeback in remake of Toni Erdmann

A lot of filmgoers will find it hard to believe that it’s been several years since Hollywood legend Jack Nicholson was last seen on the big-screen.

Fortunately the three-time Oscar-winning star of classics like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), The Shining (1980), Batman (1989), A Few Good Men (1992), As Good as It Gets (1997) and The Departed (2007) is finally making his comeback in an English-language remake of the German comedy Toni Erdmann.

Variety reported on the news last night saying that Paramount Pictures had acquired the rights to the film though a director and writer has yet to be found.

Nicholson is said to have been a big fan of the original 2016 release which starred Peter Simonischek as a practical joke-loving father who attempts to reconnect with his straight-laced daughter (Sandra Huller) by posing as her life coach.

With the ‘Jack’ taking on Simonischek’s role, the part of his daughter is set to be taken by former Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters) who is also producing the film with director Adam McKay (The Big Short) and comedian actor Will Ferrell (Elf, Blades of Glory). Maren Ade, who directed the original film, is also on board as an executive producer.

Many will be hoping that Nicholson’s comeback role will be a more memorable one compared to his previous on-screen appearance in the disappointing 2010 romcom How Do You Know.

The original Toni Erdmann film is currently up for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Oscars as it looks to add that accolade to the five it won at last year’s European Film Awards.
