Hugh Jackman portrays failed presidential candidate Gary Hart in The Front Runner trailer

Following the huge success of his previous film The Greatest Showman, Hugh Jackman is tackling the role of another real-life figure in his next project.

The Golden Globe-winning star of the X-Men series (2000-2017) and Les Miserables (2012) plays a more troubled individual in politician Gary Hart in the political biopic The Front Runner.

Touted as a potential awards contender, the film’s trailer was posted by Jackman on his Twitter account earlier today.

Helmed by award-winning filmmaker Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air), the story focuses on the rise and fall of Hart, a charismatic U.S. Senator from Colorado, who was considered the front-runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination only for his campaign to be dented by the story of an extramarital relationship.

Amongst the big names supporting Jackman in the film include Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, Bates Motel) as Hart’s wife Lee and Oscar-winner J.K Simmons (Juno, Whiplash) as his campaign manager Bill Dixon.

The rest of the talented ensemble cast includes Molly Ephraim (Paranormal Activity 2, Last Man Standing), Kaitlyn Dever (Last Man Standing, Detroit), Sara Paxton (Aquamarine, The Last House on the Left), Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects, Hostage), Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill), Mamoudou Athie (The Get Down, The Circle), Bill Burr (Date Night, Breaking Bad), Courtney Ford (Dexter, Legends of Tomorrow), Ari Graynor (Whip It, The Disaster Artist), Toby Huss (King of the Hill, Halt and Catch Fire) and Alfred Molina (An Education, Feud: Bette and Joan).

The Front Runner will be released in the UK on 25th January 2019.
