Hugh Jackman cast as Blackbeard in new Peter Pan film

Following a very busy 2013 which saw him sing, fight and go mad in three major films, Hugh Jackman is understandably keeping things quiet in 2014 (aside from another Wolverine appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past).

But his next high-profile outing will see him captain his own ship after it was confirmed last night that the Oscar-nominated star of Les Miserables and Prisoners will take on the role of Blackbeard in a new film adaptation of the fairytale adventure Peter Pan.

Directed by Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement) and simply entitled Pan, the plot will focus on the origins of “the boy who never grew up” and his future nemesis Captain Hook as they forged an unlikely friendship whilst working aboard Blackbeard’s ship.

On the casting, Warner Bros president Greg Silverman said:

“Hugh Jackman always delivers indelible performances that resonate with audiences. We know he will create a Blackbeard who will be a powerful presence in this original Peter Pan adventure.”

Jackman takes on the role following the departure of original choice Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall). Reportedly, Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davies) is in talks to play Hook while the casting of Peter Pan himself has yet to be arranged.

The film will be the fourth major Pan feature to be made following on from the 1953 Disney animated classic, Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991) and more recently, the disappointing 2003 blockbuster.

Jackman and Wright’s cinematic version will be released on June 26th 2015.
