It was a rough evening for many vocal critics and Twitter pundits as two diverse films dominated at last night’s star-studded (and hostless) Oscar ceremony.

Following a fiery yet unpredictable awards season, it was a night to remember for Green Book as the light-hearted biopic claimed three Oscar wins including the coveted Best Picture accolade.

The film, which centres on the unlikely friendship between Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip and African-American pianist Dr. Don Shirley, also nabbed Best Original Screenplay while Mahershala Ali picked up his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar in three years for his portrayal of Shirley.

Green Book’s success came at the expense of the Mexican drama Roma which had been the heavy favourite to take home the main award prior to the ceremony. Filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón at least had the consolation of claiming three gongs for Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film.

Despite being deemed a critical disappointment upon its release, Bohemian Rhapsody had the last laugh as the Queen biopic finished up with the most wins on the night with four.

Rami Malek was deservedly crowned Best Actor for his portrayal of legendary frontman Freddie Mercury while the film also landed Best Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Editing.

During his speech, Rami talked about his immigrant background whilst also paying lovely tributes to his mother Nelly and his co-star-turned-lover Lucy Boynton.

Queen themselves opened the ceremony alongside singer Adam Lambert as they performed epic renditions of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions”.

Elsewhere, British actress Olivia Colman pulled off a surprise upset as she overcame veteran frontrunner Glenn Close to win Best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in the historical dramedy The Favourite. It was disappointing for Close who is now winless from seven nominations stretching back to 1983.

The final acting award was given to Regina King as she overcame the likes of Amy Adams and Rachel Weisz to win Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Sharon Rivers in the indie drama If Beale Street Could Talk.

Spike Lee finally secured his first gold statuette for his screenplay on the crime drama Blackkklansman while Lady Gaga eased her way to a first Oscar triumph for her powerful rendition of “Shallow” from A Star is Born.

It was also a top night for two Marvel films as Black Panther and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse both enjoyed success. Black Panther took home Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score while Spider-Man snared the Best Animated Film gong.

The other triumphant films were Vice (Best Makeup & Hairstyling), First Man (Best Visual Effects), Free Solo (Best Documentary), Period. End of Sentence. (Best Documentary – Short Subject), Skin (Best Short Film – Live Action) and Bao (Best Short Film – Animated).
