Last night saw Hollywood come together for the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards on a night dominated by women, the colour black and the usual award winners.

A vast majority of stars and guests wore black as part of the Time’s Up protest to support the #MeToo movement. The movement was formed last year to bring an end to sexual harassment, sexual abuse and sexual discrimination in the industry in the wake of recent Hollywood scandals.

During the ceremony, host Seth Meyers delivered a stirring monologue about the recent scandals while the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Nicole Kidman and Natalie Portman contributed their strong opinions through different speeches.

The big winner in the film categories this year was the comic-drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which clinched four Golden Globes including the coveted Best Film (Drama) award. The film, which stars Frances McDormand as a scornful woman who challenges the authorities of her town over their failure to solve her murdered daughter’s case, beat off stern competition from the likes of the fantasy romance The Shape of Water, the war epic Dunkirk and the historical drama The Post to win the main gong.

McDormand won Best Actress (Drama) for her acclaimed performance in the film ahead of the likes of Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water) and Meryl Streep (The Post) while co-star Sam Rockwell picked up Best Supporting Actor ahead of veterans Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project) and Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World).

Three Billboards also scooped Best Screenplay for filmmaker Martin McDonagh who was unable to make it a double victory as he lost out on Best Director to Guillermo del Toro for his work on The Shape of Water. The fantasy film also picked up Best Original Score for its composer Alexandre Desplat.

Despite a dodgy history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Gary Oldman picked up the Best Actor (Drama) gong for his portrayal of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the biopic Darkest Hour. The win bolsters his chances of a first Oscar success as he overcame strong competition like Tom Hanks (The Post), Denzel Washington and the retiring Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread).

Elsewhere, the indie-comedy Lady Bird picked up two awards for Best Film (Comedy/Musical) and Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for leading star Saoirse Ronan as a rebellious teenager. Lady Bird won a strong film lineup ahead of Get Out, The Disaster Artist, The Greatest Showman and I, Tonya though the latter three films did celebrate success in other categories.

James Franco scooped the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) award for his portrayal of real-life actor Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist while Allison Janney clinched Best Supporting Actress for her role as the damning mother of ice skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya.

The Greatest Showman picked up the Best Original Song award while Pixar’s Coco and the German drama In the Fade won Best Animated Film and Best Foreign Language Film respectively.

In the television lineup, the HBO mini-series Big Little Lies was the big victor on the night as it landed four accolades which included acting wins for stars Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard.

Kidman won Best Actress in a Mini-Series for her powerful role as vulnerable housewife Celeste Wright ahead of co-star Reese Witherspoon and Feud: Bette and Joan duo Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon while Skarsgard and Dern won the Best Supporting Actor / Actress categories for their riveting work.

Unsurprisingly, the series itself won Best Mini-Series as it beat off the likes of Feud: Bette and Joan and Fargo. The latter show did pick up an award for British star Ewan McGregor as he picked up Best Actor in a Mini-Series for his dual role in the comic-drama.

Elsewhere, the dystopian drama series The Handmaid’s Tale overcame strong competition from The Crown, Stranger Things and Game of Thrones to clinch Best Television Series (Drama) while leading star Elisabeth Moss won Best Actress (Drama) for her performance as fertile heroine Offred.

Sterling K. Brown received the Best Actor (Drama) award for his role in This is Us and in doing so became the first African-American actor to win in that particular category.

Finally, the comedy categories saw the Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel clinch two wins for Best Television Series (Comedy/Musical) and Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for leading star Rachel Brosnahan. Aziz Ansari landed Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for his role in Master of None ahead of the likes of Kevin Bacon and William H. Macy.
