Golden Globe (TV) nominations: The Night Manager and The People v O.J Simpson dominate

In what has been a fantastic year for television, the Golden Globes have announced a strong lineup of nominees for next year’s ceremony.

Leading the pack is the crime-case mini-series The People v O.J. Simpson which received five mentions including the coveted Best Mini-Series category.

It also scored acting nominations for Courtney B. Vance (Best Actor in a Mini-Series), Sarah Paulson (Best Actress in a Mini-Series) and supporting duo Sterling K. Brown and John Travolta (Best Supporting Actor in a Series / Mini-Series).

There was also a strong showing from the BBC thriller series The Night Manager as it secured four nominations including Best Mini-Series as well as acting nods for Tom Hiddleston (Best Actor in a Mini-Series), Hugh Laurie (Best Supporting Actor in a Series / Mini-Series) and Olivia Colman (Best Supporting Actress in a Series / Mini-Series).

Both O.J. and Night Manager are in competition for the Best Mini-Series accolade along with American Crime, The Dresser and The Night Of. The latter show also secured double acting noms for British actor Riz Ahmed and John Turturro.

Elsewhere, HBO heavyweights Game of Thrones and Westworld will battle it out in the Best Drama Series category along with NBC’s This is Us and Netflix hits The Crown and Stranger Things.

Thrones could only manage one acting nod for Lena Headey (as scheming Queen Cersei) while Westworld was acknowledged in Best Actress (TV Drama) and Best Supporting Actress (Series / Mini-Series) for female stars Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores) and Thandie Newton (Maeve).

The historical series The Crown deservedly secured acting mentions for Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill while Winona Ryder was recognised for her lead role in Stranger Things.

The usual suspects like Rami Malek (Mr Robot), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and The Americans duo Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell were also amongst the key drama acting nominees.

In the Comedy television categories, Black-ish recevied three nominations for Best Television Series (Comedy/Musical) as well as acting noms for Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Atlanta, Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent and Veep were also nodded in the main group of series nominees. Gael Bernal Garcia (Mozart), Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) were amongst the familiar faces to receive mentions. Former Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker was also shortlisted in Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for her riotous role in the HBO sitcom Divorce.

However there no mentions at all for favourites like Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine Nine or The Big Bang Theory!

The 2017 Golden Globes will take place on January 8th, with chat show host Jimmy Fallon presenting.
