Golden Globe (TV) nominations: The Crown, Chernobyl and Unbelievable lead the pack

Following another spectacular year for television, the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) have announced their nominees for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Three different series received a quartet of nominations each with Netflix’s The Crown performing well on the TV Drama side of things. The third season of the historical drama is shortlisted for Best TV Series (Drama) along with HBO’s Big Little Lies and Succession, Apple TV’s The Morning Show and BBC America’s Killing Eve.

For her portrayal of Queen Elisabeth II, Olivia Colman is in contention for Best Actress (Drama) in a strong category alongside BAFTA and Emmy winner Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies) and Morning Show duo Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

Colman’s co-stars Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter are also acknowledged in Best Actor (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress for their respective roles as Prince Phillip and Princess Margaret. Menzies contests his category alongside Emmy winner Billy Porter (Pose), Brian Cox (Succession) and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) with the fifth slot given to Kit Harington who was the sole nominee to come out of Game of Thrones’s maligned final series.

As for Carter, her Supporting Actress rivals include the great Meryl Streep for Big Little Lies and Patricia Arquette for The Act.

Two other programmes to perform well were Sky Atlantic’s Chernobyl and Netflix’s Unbelievable with both receiving four nominations each including Best Mini-Series. The other three shows to contest that category are Catch-22, Fosse/Verdon and The Loudest Voice.

Chernobyl also secured three acting nods for Jared Harris (Best Actor in a Mini Series), Stellan Skarsgård (Best Supporting Actor) and Emily Watson (Best Supporting Actress). Harris contends a strong category which includes Sacha Baron Cohen (The Spy), Russell Crowe (The Loudest Voice) and Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon).

Fittingly, Unbelievable saw its three central actresses Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever and Toni Collette all being acknowledged. Dever and Wever face formidable competition in Best Actress (Mini-Series) from the likes of British veteran Helen Mirren (Catherine the Great) and Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon).

On the comedy front, Fleabag, Barry and The Kominsky Method all garnered three nominations each including a place on the Best TV Series (Comedy) shortlist. The category is also filled by Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Netflix’s The Politician.

Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge looks to be a strong favourite to win Best Actress (C/M) which she contests along with the likes of Christina Applegate (Dead to Me) and Kirsten Dunst (On Becoming a God in Central Florida). Phoebe’s co-star Andrew Scott is also looking to triumph in the Best Supporting Actor category after being nodded for his role as the ‘Hot Priest’ in the hit BBC comedy. His competition includes Kieran Culkin (Succession) and veterans Alan Arkin (Kominsky Method) and Henry Winkler (Barry)

On the subject of Kominsky, Michael Douglas is looking to make it back-to-back wins in Best Actor (C/M) for the Netflix series as he goes up against Ant-Man co-star Paul Rudd (Living With Yourself) and Bill Hader (Barry).

There were a notable number of snubs across the board with the biggest being a complete shutout for the Netflix mini-series When They See Us. Additionally, the final series of The Big Bang Theory and Veep were completely ignored along with the Breaking Bad spin-off El Camino.

Next year’s Golden Globes will take place on January 5 2020 at the Beverly Hilton hotel. British comedian Ricky Gervais will host the ceremony for the fifth and final time of his career.
