Gemma Arterton cast as music legend Dusty Springfield in upcoming biopic

Over the past decade or so, the lovely Gemma Arterton has showcased her acting talent in a number of diverse films ranging from the good (The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Tamara Drewe, A Song for Marion) to the not-so-good (Quantum of Solace, Clash of the Titans, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time).

In recent years, she has managed to move away from mainstream roles in order to concentrate on more independent productions as well as appearing at the West End.

The British actress is now set to tackle the biggest role of her career so far having landed the part of soul legend Dusty Springfield in an upcoming biopic which is being directed by Carol screenwriter Phyllis Nagy.

Entitled So Much Love, the film will follow Dusty as she navigated her way through the politics of the recording studio and the city, and will also explore her encounter with the music of Motown, her stand against apartheid policies during her aborted South African tour and her thorny brushes with men in the music industry.

The film will also feature a number of her hit songs including “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”, “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Just a Little Lovin'”.

On being cast as Dusty, Gemma said:

“I have been an admirer of Dusty Springfield since I was a teenager: her effortless husky voice, the way she conveyed emotion through music, how she helped bring Motown to the U.K. Dusty was ahead of her time in many ways and inspired so many future artists. She was generous, witty, mercurial, shy, extrovert and a true English eccentric. I simply cannot wait to play her.”

Dusty is the latest British music legend to receive the biopic treatment following in the recent footsteps of John Lennon (Nowhere Boy), Freddie Mercury (in next month’s Bohemian Rhapsody) and Elton John (in next year’s Rocketman).
