Gareth Edwards to direct Star Wars spinoff as well as Godzilla sequel

Four years after catching public attention with his indie-thriller Monsters, Gareth Edwards is suddenly becoming one of the best young directors in film.

The Welsh-born filmmaker is currently promoting his next major flick, which is ironically another monster-themed production.

The reboot of Godzilla is already making a huge splash in cinemas which has led to surprise news regarding a sequel.

But Edwards has now managed to land another rewarding gig behind the camera after it was confirmed earlier today that he would be helming one of the new Star Wars spinoffs.

Though the actual film is not yet known, Edwards spoke about the news on the Star Wars website.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honour.”

The spinoff has also brought in a new writer in the form of Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli, After Earth) who said:

“From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer.

It is deeply special to me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a filmmaker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Current plans call for Disney to release new Star Wars films each year and will alter between JJ Abrams’s sequels and spinoffs.

In the meantime, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull has revealed that Edwards will make Godzilla 2 after he finishes working on the Star Wars film, which is currently scheduled for release on December 16th 2016.

“Gareth’s film-making talent makes him one of his generation’s most creative and visionary directors.

“The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would be a Star Wars installment?

“We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth’s imprint on the Star Wars universe.”

It is also believed that Edwards could direct a third Godzilla film though that idea itself already sounds far-fetched!

The sequel’s script is currently in devel0pment with a release date likely to be set for 2017.
