The best of television has been recognised in this year’s Emmy Awards lineup with Game of Thrones leading the pack.

Despite a controversial final series, the epic HBO hit has dominated again with a record-breaking 32 nominations including the coveted Outstanding Drama Series gong.

Close to a dozen of the cast received nods as well with Emilia Clarke (Lead Actress) and Kit Harington acknowledged in the lead categories for their iconic portrayals of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow. Co-stars Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Carice van Houten (Melisandre) were also recognised for their performances.

Thrones goes up against British programmes Bodyguard and Killing Eve for outstanding drama series, alongside Better Call Saul, Ozark, Pose, Succession and This is Us.

Another top nominee was Sky’s nuclear disaster mini-series Chernobyl, which received 19 nominations, including best limited series. Stars Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson were all nodded in their respective acting categories.

Also performing well in the limited series lineup is the Netflix drama When They See Us which scored a remarkable sixteen nominations. Based on the true story of the Central Park Five, the series received a number of acting mentions for the likes of Jharrel Jerome, Niecy Nash and Michael K. Williams.

After winning the TV BAFTA for Best Actress in May, Liverpool-born actress Jodie Comer finds herself in contention for the same award for her acclaimed role as psychopathic assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve. She competes against her co-star Sandra Oh in a strong Best Actress (Drama) line-up.

Hugh Grant is nominated for best actor in a limited series or movie for his role as controversial politician Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal. His competition, aside from Harington, Harris and Jerome, is Mahershala Ali (True Detective), Benicio Del Toro (Escape at Dannemora) and Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon).

Fleabag, a dark comedy about a Londoner (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) grappling with the death of her best friend and her troublesome family, sees nominations for all five of its female stars – Waller-Bridge, Olivia Colman, Sian Clifford, Kristin Scott Thomas and Fiona Shaw – who picks up a second nomination for her role as MI6 chief Carolyn Martens in Killing Eve.

However, Waller-Bridge, who created Fleabag, faces stiff competition in the best comedy actress category.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who already holds the record for the most Emmy awards for a single role, will be hoping to pick up a seventh prize for her portrayal of vainglorious US President Selena Meyer in the final series of Veep.

Last year’s winner, Rachel Brosnahan, is also a favourite for Amazon Prime’s comedy-drama The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, in which she plays an aspiring comedian in 1950s New York.

There were also a series of surprising snubs with the likes of Richard Madden (Bodyguard), Ricky Gervais (After Life), Julia Roberts (Homecoming), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul) and Ian McShane (Deadwood: The Movie) ignored in the acting categories while the final series of The Big Bang Theory was overlooked altogether.

The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on 22nd September.
