It was an evening to remember for Game of Thrones and a number of British talent as the 2019 Emmys took place in Hollywood last night.

The television-themed event saw the final series of Thrones clinch the coveted Outstanding Drama gong ahead of the likes of Killing Eve, Better Call Saul, Ozark and Bodyguard.

Despite a diverse reaction from critics and fans to its final few episodes, the epic fantasy series enjoyed the last laugh by tying the record for the most wins in that prestigious category with predecessors like The West Wing, L.A. Law, Mad Men and Hill Street Blues.

Peter Dinklage landed his fourth Emmy success in Best Supporting Actor (Drama) for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister though co-stars Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams all missed out on wins in their own categories.

Elsewhere, Liverpudlian actress Jodie Comer pulled off a stunning victory in Best Actress (Drama) as she won for her iconic role as psychotic assassin Villanelle in the hit BBC series Killing Eve.

Her triumph came at the expense of her co-star Sandra Oh who was seen as the sentimental favourite going into last night’s awards. During her emotional acceptance speech, Jodie said:

“I was not expecting to get up on this stage at all. I cannot believe I am in a category alongside these women, one of them who is my co-star Sandra Oh.

Safe to say, Sandra, that this Killing Eve journey has been an absolute whirlwind and I feel so lucky to have shared the whole experience with you.

My mum (Donna) and dad (Jimmy) who are in Liverpool, who I didn’t invite because I didn’t think this was going to be my time.

One, I’m sorry. Two, I love you and I’m going to bring it home.”

Killing Eve series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge also enjoyed a fabulous night as she won Best Actress (Comedy) and Outstanding Writing (Comedy) for her work on the bittersweet BBC sitcom Fleabag.

The series also prevailed in the Outstanding Comedy category ahead of other strong contenders like the final season of Veep plus Barry, The Good Place and The Kominsky Method.

There was also success for another British actor in Ben Whishaw who landed the Best Supporting Actor (Limited Series) Emmy for his portrayal of Norman Scott in the BBC drama A Very English Scandal. This accolade followed up his Golden Globe and BAFTA wins earlier this year.

British writers Charlie Brooker and Jesse Armstrong were the other high-profile Brits to earn recognition for their respective works on Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and the HBO series Succession.

Meanwhile, Billy Porter made history by becoming the first gay man to win the Best Actor (Drama) award for his performance in the dance musical Pose.

Sky’s critically-acclaimed mini-series Chernobyl was named Outstanding Limited Series which followed up its success at the Creative Emmys last week.

Despite losing out in a number of categories, the Central Park Five mini-series When They See Us earned Jharrell Jerome a deserved victory in Best Actor (Limited Series) for his portrayal of the victimised Korey Wise. Fittingly, the five men who were acquitted of the crime (including Wise) were in attendance at the ceremony.

Michelle Williams also received recognition as she clinched Best Actress (Limited Series) for her role as real-life Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon in the real-life mini-series Fosse/Verdon.

Amazon’s hit sitcom The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continued its strong awards run as co-stars Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein earned Supporting Actor/Actress (Comedy) for their humourous performances.

The Netflix crime drama Ozark also scooped two prizes with leading star Jason Bateman surprisingly winning Best Director (Drama) while Julia Garner prevailed in Best Supporting Actress (Drama) ahead of FOUR contenders from Game of Thrones.

Finally, Bill Hader scooped Best Actor (Comedy) for his role in Barry while Patricia Arquette was named Best Supporting Actress (Limited Series) for the crime drama The Act.

It was a bad night for the likes of Better Call Saul, House of Cards, This is Us and the final series of Veep as they all went home empty-handed.
