As they prepare to conclude their work on one of the greatest television series of all-time, David Benioff and D.B Weiss will be swapping the world of Westeros for a galaxy far, far away in the not-too-distant future.

The Emmy Award-winning producing and writing duo of HBO’s mega hit Game of Thrones are confirmed to be working on a group of new films based around the beloved sci-fi franchise Star Wars.

The films will be completely separate from the Skywalker Saga which is set to conclude when Star Wars: Episode IX is released in 2019. Surprisingly, they also have no connection to an upcoming trilogy which is being made by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

In a statement that was posted on Instagram, Wenioff and Weiss said:

“In the summer of 1977 we travelled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.

We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy also had her say on the news:

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Given the incredible work they have done on Thrones, you can expect Wenioff and Weiss to provide plenty of twists and turns to the new films. Unfortunately for them, the incest side of things has been done before!

A number of Thrones actors have recently been involved with the new Star Wars films which include Max von Sydow (Three Eyed Raven) in The Force Awakens, Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma) in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and Emilia Clarke in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

In the meantime, the final series of Game of Thrones is set to premiere at some point in 2019 (which is still so far away!).
