Felicity Jones and her rebel team attempt to infiltrate the Death Star in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer

Last year saw the Star Wars franchise return with a bang thanks to the universal success of its seventh installment The Force Awakens.

But with fans now eagerly anticipating the next outing, Disney and Lucasfilm have been working on a new origin film that is set to take us back to a crucial period in the Star Wars timeline.

While the word ‘prequel’ isn’t popular with some followers of the epic saga, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story promises to be a darker and grittier film that will certainly not involve Jar Jar Binks or embarrassing quotes about sand….

It’s trailer has finally hit the web and can be seen below:

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla), the story will take place just before the events of A New Hope (1977) in which a band of Rebel Spies raid an Empire base in order to steal the Death Star’s secret plans.

Felicity Jones (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Theory of Everything) plays the leader of the team and is supported by Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, Bloodline), Diego Luna (Milk, Elysium), Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Hannibal), Riz Ahmed (Four Lions, Nightcrawler), Alan Tudyk (A Knight’s Tale, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story), Donnie Yen (Blade II, Ip Man trilogy), Jonathan Aris (Sightseers, The Night Manager) and Oscar winner Forest Whittaker (The Last King of Scotland, Southpaw).

The film is likely to see iconic villain Darth Vader involved while CGI is being used to recreate fellow Star Wars baddie Grand Moff Tarkin (as played in A New Hope by Peter Cushing).

Rogue One will be released in cinemas worldwide on December 16th.
