Emma Stone plays a young Cruella de Vil in official trailer for ‘Cruella’

This year marks an important anniversary for Disney fanatics. Not only did 1961 introduce us to the lovable animation 101 Dalmatians, but it also featured the debut of one of the greatest villains ever to ‘disgrace’ the big-screen.

Memorably voiced by Betty Lou Garson, Cruella de Vil terrified young audiences with her dastardly personality and her obsession with making fur coats out of animals.

Three decades later, Glenn Close then did the iconic character justice in the live-action remake 101 Dalmatians (1996) and its disappointing sequel 102 Dalmatians (2000).

Disney have now decided to focus on the origins of the legendary villainess via an upcoming prequel that sees Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone (La La Land, The Favourite) step into the role.

Simply entitled ‘Cruella‘, the film’s trailer already promises a real edge to the usual Disney fanfare.

Directed by Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm, I, Tonya), the plot centres on Cruella during her early years as a fashion designer in London.

Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya, Richard Jewell) and Joel Fry (Trollied, Plebs) have been cast as the villainess’s bumbling henchmen Horace and Jasper with additional support coming from Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, 1917), Emily Beecham (Daphne, Into the Badlands), Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve, The Good Place) and Oscar-winner Emma Thompson (Howards End, Saving Mr. Banks).

Despite the current pandemic, Cruella is currently scheduled for release in cinemas on 28 May.
