Emily Blunt’s Mary Poppins returns to help the Banks children in new trailer for Mary Poppins Returns

This Christmas promises to be a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious one for Disney fans as one of the most beloved film characters of all time returns for a new adventure.

The magical nanny Mary Poppins first swooped down from the skies in the classic 1964 musical Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews becoming a household name through her Oscar-winning role.

Over fifty years later, the iconic character is now being portrayed by another talented British actress in Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada Into the Woods, Sicario) who headlines the upcoming sequel Mary Poppins Returns.

Following the release of a charming teaser a few months ago, a new full-length trailer has premiered on Good Morning America.

Directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine, Into the Woods), the follow-up is set twenty years after the original film and sees a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks struggling to cope with the loss of their father George. However the pair are stunned when their former nanny Mary Poppins returns as she decides to help them (and Michael’s children) rediscover the magic and joy missing in their lives.

The film features a majestic cast which sees Emily Mortimer (The Newsroom, The Bookshop) and Ben Whishaw (Spectre, Paddington 2) portray the older versions of Jane and Michael. Additionally, the roles of Michael’s three children are being played by youngsters Pixie Davies (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Perculiar Children, Humans), Nathanael Saleh (Game of Thrones) and Joel Dawson.

But wait, that’s not all!

There are plenty more heavyweight stars appearing in the film which include three-time Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia, Into the Woods), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Julie Walters (Harry Potter series, Paddington 2), Dame Angela Lansbury (Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Beauty and the Beast) and Broadway star Lin-Manuel Hamilton (Hamilton, Moana) as Mary’s new friend Jack.

Experienced British actors David Warner (Tron, Titanic) and Jim Norton (Father Ted) also have roles in the film as classic Poppins characters Admiral Bloom and Mr Binnacle.

And of course, there’s the small matter of a certain Dick Van Dyke who is the only original cast member from Mary Poppins to return for the sequel. But instead of playing cockney chimney-sweeper Bert, the much-loved comedian actor will be tackling the role of Mr Dawes Jnr. Remarkably, Dick previously portrayed Mr. Dawes Snr in the 1964 outing!

Christmas will be a jolly holiday for all when Mary Poppins Returns arrives in UK cinemas on December 21st.
