It was another victorious night for La La Land as the acclaimed romantic musical landed five BAFTA wins including the coveted Best Film award.

There was also key victories for Damien Chazelle and leading star Emma Stone as the pair won Best Director and Best Actress respectively. The film also picked up Best Cinematography and Best Film Music during last night’s prestige ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

However its success wasn’t as dominant as many had predicted as the Brits opted to share the love to a variety of films.

There were two prizes for the indie-drama Manchester by the Sea as leading star Casey Affleck secured a crucial Best Actor win for his powerful performance as a troubled Boston janitor while the film also clinched Best Original Screenplay for writer/director Kenneth Lonergan.

Another film to celebrate two wins was the biopic drama Lion as it received Best Adapted Screenplay for writer Luke Davies while Dev Patel boosted his hopes of Oscar success by winning Best Supporting Actor for his role as Saroo Brierley, the real-life Australian / Indian man who used Google Earth in order to track down his long-lost family.

Elsewhere, Viola Davis added yet another award to her cabinet as she picked up the Best Supporting Actress BAFTA for her role as Rose Maxson in the family drama Fences. She is now a strong certainty to win the Oscar in two weeks time.

Meanwhile, Ken Loach’s powerful benefits-system drama I, Daniel Blake unsurprisingly won Best British Film while Kubo and the Two Strings beat off the much-fancied Zootopia to win Best Animated Film.

The other films to enjoy BAFTA success were Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Best Production Design), Jackie (Best Costume Design), Florence Foster Jenkins (Best Makeup), Hacksaw Ridge (Best Editing), Arrival (Best Sound), The Jungle Book (Best Visual Effects), Son of Saul (Best Foreign Language Film) and 13th (Best Documentary)

British starlet Tom Holland received the BAFTA Rising Star Award for his promising career so far with his performance in The Impossible (2012) and his potentially-successful role as the new Peter Parker / Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Finally, veteran director/producer Mel Brooks received the BAFTA Fellowship award for his work on renowned comedy films over the last fifty years including The Producers (1967), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), High Anxiety (1977), To Be or Not to Be (1983), Spaceballs (1987) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993).

However it was a bad night for the likes of Moonlight (four nods) and Nocturnal Animals (nine nods) as both failed to win from their group of nominations.
