Eddie Murphy’s King Akeem returns to New York for another adventure in Coming 2 America trailer

Back in the 1980s, Eddie Murphy was one of Hollywood’s most prolific actors with lucrative roles in 48 Hrs. (1982), Trading Places (1983) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984).

During that exciting period, he also worked on the hit John Landis-directed comedy Coming to America (1988). That particular outing saw him play Prince Akeem, the charismatic heir to the Zamunda throne who embarked on a mission to New York to find himself an American bride (with eventual success).

Now over thirty years on, Murphy and co. are returning for a long-awaited sequel aptly named Coming 2 America and due for release on Amazon Prime next year.

An official trailer for the follow-up has premiered and provides us with a solid inclusion of nostalgia and witty gags.

The plot sees (now) King Akeem discover that he has a long-lost son in the United States which forces him to return to America to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.

Alongside Murphy, the sequel also brings back other cast members from the original film including Arsenio Hall (Semmi), James Earl Jones (Jaffe Joffer), Shari Headley (Lisa McDowell), John Amos (Cleo McDowell), Louie Anderson (Maurice) and Paul Bates (Oha). Additionally, Murphy and Hall are also reprising their roles as the mocking Barbershop group which is bound to provide plenty of laughs.

The only major character not returning is that of Akeem’s mother Queen Aoleon following the death of actress Madge Sinclair back in 1995.

There are also a number of new faces involved in this outing including Wesley Snipes (Demolition Man, Blade trilogy), Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live, Ghostbusters), KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk, Native Son), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock, Rio), Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You, Superior Donuts), Rotimi (Boss, Power), Nomzamo Mbatha (Umlilo, All About Love) and Teyana Taylor (Honey: Rise Up and Dance, The After Party).

Having directed Murphy in the blaxploitation biopic Dolemite is My Name (2019), Craig Brewer (Empire) steps in helm the follow-up in place of original filmmaker John Landis.

Coming 2 America will be streaming on Amazon Prime on 5 March 2021.
