Downton Abbey’s Lily James is Cinderella in official trailer for Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella

Having achieved success with the likes of 101 Dalmatians, Alice in Wonderland and more recently, Maleficent, Disney are set to unveil their latest live-action adaptation of a beloved classic with their upcoming take on Cinderella.

British actor/director Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet, Thor) has been tasked with helming the fantasy adventure which is based on the 1950 animated hit of the same name.

The official trailer for the film has now premièred online.

Based on the classic fairytale, the film sees British starlet Lily James (Downton Abbey) portray the title character as she endures the heartbreak of losing her father. She is then forced to work as a slave for her cruel step-mother but her situation changes when a Fairy Godmother gives her the chance to attend a royal ball in a glamourous gown.

Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Blue Jasmine) plays the cunning step-mother with additional support coming from Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland, The King’s Speech) as the Fairy Godmother and Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden as Prince Charming.

Cinderella will be released in the UK on March 27th 2015.
