Django Unchained and Ted lead 2013 MTV Movie Award nominations

While Oscar season may be over, the awards just keep on coming as MTV revealed their nominations for the 22nd MTV Movie Awards.

Quentin Tarantino’s violent western Django Unchained and Seth MacFarlane’s comedy hit Ted are the joint-leading contenders this year with seven nominations each including Movie of the Year.

Django, which recently secured two wins at the Oscars a fortnight ago, also received nods for Best Male Performance (Jamie Foxx), Best Villain (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best On-Screen Duo (Di-Caprio & Samuel L. Jackson), Best Fight (Django vs Candieland Henchmen), Best Kiss (Foxx and Kerry Washington) and Best WTF Moment.

Ted secured mentions in Best Female Performance (Mila Kunis), Best On-Screen Duo (Mark Wahlberg & Ted), Best Fight (Wahlberg vs Ted), Best Kiss (Wahlberg & Kunis), Best WTF Moment and Best Shirtless Performance (Ted).

There was also a lot of love for the romantic dramedy Silver Linings Playbook (six nods) and concluding comic-book sequel The Dark Knight Rises (five nods).

Silver Linings stars Bradley Cooper and recently-crowned Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence were both named in their respective Best Performance categories but also shared mentions in the Best On-Screen Duo, Best Kiss and Best Musical Moment awards. Lawrence (who enjoyed success at last year’s ceremony with The Hunger Games) is also up for the Best Scared-As-Shit Performance for her role in House at the End of the Street. Amongst her competitors in that category include her Oscar rival Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty.

As usual there was a strong turnout for the popcorn flicks as the likes of The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Skyfall all gained key mentions with stars from those films like Robert Downey Jr, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Daniel Craig and Tom Hardy being nominated in various categories. But usually dominant at these awards, the final Twilight film Breaking Dawn Part II only managed one nod for Best Shirtless Performance (Taylor Lautner).

However there was more of an Oscar feeling around these nominees with recently-crowned Best Picture winner Argo, Les Miserables, Life of Pi and Lincoln all being mentioned somewhere while smaller films like Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom and The Perks of Being a Wallflower got some attention.

The 2013 MTV Movie Awards will take place on Sunday April 14th and will be hosted by Rebel Wilson (ironically nominated twice for her role in hit comedy Pitch Perfect).
