Disney confirm live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame

With live-action versions of Dumbo, Aladdin AND The Lion King due out this year, Disney are showing no signs of stopping when it comes to making new adaptations of their animated classics.

Having previously remade the likes of Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast recently, the studio have now confirmed that the 1996 film The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be the latest animation to get the live-action treatment.

Based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo, the story centres on Quasimodo, a a disfigured bell-ringer living in the bell-tower of Notre Dame who forges an unlikely friendship with a beautiful gypsy woman named Esmeralda.

It has been speculated that Josh Gad (Frozen, Beauty and the Beast) is up for the lead role having already taken on producing duties alongside Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang.

The new film’s music will also be adapted by Disney veterans Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz with classic songs like “Out There”, “Topsy Turvy” and “Hellfire” set to feature once again.

Despite being considered dark for younger audiences, the 1996 animation received solid reviews and also boasted a strong voice cast which included Tom Hulce (Quasimodo), Demi Moore (Esmeralda), Kevin Kline (Phoebus) and Tony Jay (Frollo).

Below is one of the film’s classic musical sequences featuring one of my all-time favourite film villains!
