Disney’s obsession with recreating their old animated films into live-action features is starting to irritate a few people even after the recent successes of Maleficent and Cinderella.

But now the renowned company have made another bold production decision by confirming that they plan to make a sequel to one of their all-time classics, Mary Poppins.

The follow-up will be helmed by director Rob Marshall who has had previous experience of making big-screen musicals which include the Oscar-winning Chicago (2002), Nine (2009) and last year’s Into the Woods.

Released way back in 1964, the much-loved family musical starred the great Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music, Victor and Victoria) as a magical nanny who helped to heal the relationship between the Banks family with the aid of her friend Bert (played by a cockney-speaking Dick Van Dyke).

The film was adapted from the successful 1934 novel by author P.L Travers with the behind-the-scenes drama being focused on in the 2013 biopic Saving Mr Banks, which starred Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks.

It is understood that the sequel will be set 20 years after the events of the original story which would potentially show the Banks children (Jane and Michael) as adults. Disney will be relying on the works of Travers’ other Poppins-based books to come up an intriguing story with Tony award-winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman writing new songs.

As to who will be playing Mary in the new version remains to be seen though an early contender seems to be Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises, Les Miserables) who actually starred alongside Andrews in the Disney flick The Princess Diaries (2001) and its 2004 sequel.
