Critic Choice Award winners: Big Three triumph again with Gravity coming out on top

With six weeks still to go until the Oscars take place, the battle for award dominance is continuing to be closely fought between the big three of 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Gravity.

But while 12 Years and Hustle both enjoyed more success in the major categories, Gravity showed signs that it would be standout winner with most award ceremonies after it swept seven gongs at the Critic Choice Awards.

The space blockbuster easily won Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film while director Alfonso Cuaron and actress Sandra Bullock both clinched accolades for their work. It also earned wins for Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score.

12 Years did land the coveted Best Picture award but only managed two wins elsewhere for newcomer Lupita Nyong’o in Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley.

American Hustle settled for four wins including Best Comedy Film, Best Ensemble, Best Makeup and another Best Actress in a Comedy accolade for Amy Adams.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett and Dallas Buyers Club duo Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto also followed up their recent Golden Globe wins with acting recognition here which signifies that they all stand a strong chance of potential Oscar glory.

In the rest of the categories, The Great Gatsby (Production Design, Costume Design), Frozen (Animated Film, Original Song) and Blue is the Warmest Colour (Foreign Language Film, Best Newcomer) all clinched two wins each while the surprise success of the night was for war thriller Lone Survivor, which overcame stiff competition to nab Best Action Film and Best Actor in an Action Film (Mark Wahlberg).
