Creed director Ryan Coogler to helm Marvel’s Black Panther

With the Rocky spinoff Creed garnering a lot of praise from critics and audiences recently, director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) is starting to show plenty of promise as one of cinema’s best young filmmakers.

As the boxing drama prepares to premiere in the UK this week, Coogler has now managed to land himself another high-profile gig in the form of Marvel’s latest origin film Black Panther.

The 29 year old had been heavily linked with making the film a few weeks ago but Marvel have now officially confirmed his involvement.

On the news, producer Kevin Feige said:

“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family. The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’  Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”

Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up) is tackling the role of T’Challa, king of the technologically-advanced nation of Wakanda but will be making his first appearance as the character in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.

Black Panther will be released in cinemas on February 16th 2018.
