Bumblebee gets his own origin story in new trailer for Transformers prequel Bumblebee

Over the last decade, the Transformers series has been one of the biggest (and most diverse) film franchises of recent times. Visionary filmmaker Michael Bay was responsible for helming all five outings though his involvement with the Hasbro toy-based series is finally over.

Instead, the newest film will be focusing on the origins of one Transformer favourite in Bumblebee who remains one of the more popular characters.

The prequel, simply entitled Bumblebee, has premiered its official trailer online.

Helmed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings), the story takes place in 1987 as Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. He is soon discovered by a teenage girl named Charlie who initially believes that he is a yellow VW bug. The pair forge a close bond but see their friendship threatened by both the army and other robots.

Oscar-nominated actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Edge of Seventeen) takes on the lead role of Charlie with additional support coming from John Cena (Trainwreck, Daddy’s Home), Pamela Adlon (King of the Hill, Better Things) and Kenneth Choi (The Wolf of Wall Street, Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Furthermore, Transformers legend Peter Cullen reprises his vocal role of Optimus Prime with Angela Bassett (What’s Love Got To Do With It, Black Panther) and Justin Theroux (The Leftovers, The Girl on the Train) providing additional voice work.

Bumblebee will be released in the UK on Boxing Day.
