Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones amongst big guns to dominate 2013 Emmy Award nominations

For most fans of major award ceremonies, it is usually the cold, wintery months that we get to watch them especially the Golden Globes and Oscars. However the biggest award show of the warm summer, the Emmys, focuses on the top television programmes in America as well as overseas productions that include the UK.

The nominations for this year’s Emmy award ceremony have been announced today with some of our favourite television shows being nodded.

As expected, the main categories in drama are dominated by Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Mad Men while the strong group is rounded up by British period drama Downton Abbey and the political series House of Cards.

The latter show has done well with acting nominations for two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey and co-star Robin Wright while director David Fincher is also recognised.

With its final eight episodes due out next month (August 11th), Breaking Bad has scored four acting nominations for main actors Bryan Cranston (Walter White) and Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) as well as co-stars Anna Gunn (Skylar White) and Jonathan Banks (Mike).

Last year’s Emmy-winning duo Damian Lewis and Claire Danes are again nominated for Homeland while Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks are all recognised in their acting categories for Mad Men.

The Brits have also done well for Downton with stars Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Dame Maggie Smith (popular with these awards) being nodded again while the divine Emilia Clarke is surprisingly mentioned in Best Supporting Actress (Drama) for her turn as Daenerys Targareyn in Game of Thrones. Her co-star from that show, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), is also recognised having won here in the past.

Other popular nominations in the drama categories include Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire).

Surprisingly there wasn’t much love for big shows like Boardwalk or Newsroom while even more disappointingly Hannibal was snubbed altogether!

The comedy categorises also feature some expected (if predicable) contenders with the likes of Modern Family, Girls, 30 Rock and Veep all in competition in the Best Comedy Series group.

MF continues to look strong in the supporting categories with Ed O’Neil, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell all nodded while Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara are back in contention too.

Veep is also mentioned with lead actress Julia-Louis Dreyfus (a winner last year) nominated again alongside her co-stars Tony Hale and Anna Chlumsky.

Other well-known nominees include Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey (30 Rock), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) and Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory).

Finally the TV Miniseries or Movie nominations are comfortably led by American Horror Story: Asylum with 17 mentions while the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra also stands out particularly in the acting categories (with lead stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon both picked).

The two shows are also nodded on the Best TV Miniseries category alongside The Bible, Phil Spector, Political Animals and Top of the Lake. Big names like Hollywood legend Al Pacino are recognised in the acting awards with strong support also going for Benedict Cumberbatch, Jessica Lange, Laura Linney, Dame Helen Mirren and Sigourney Weaver.

The 65th Emmys this year will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris on September 22nd. The full list of major nominations are below with my predictions.
