It was an evening to remember for the stars of multiple films and television series, as the Screen Actors Guild Awards took place in Los Angeles last night.
On the cinematic front, Marvel’s blockbuster Black Panther roared its way to victory in two categories, including the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture accolade.
The comic-book mega-hit overcame stern competition from BlackKklansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians and A Star is Born to preserver.
Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed the heroic T’Challa in the blockbuster, delivered a powerful speech about the film’s remarkable success.
“When I think of going to work every day and the passion and the intelligence, the resolve, the discipline that everybody showed, I also think of two questions that we all have received during the course of multiple publicity runs. One is: Did we know that this movie was going to receive this kind of response? Meaning, was it going to make a billion dollars? Was it going to still be around during this awards season?”
The second question is: Has it changed the industry? Has it actually changed the way this industry works and how it sees us? And my answer to that is: ‘To be young, gifted, and black.’”
It is the first time that a superhero flick has won the award, though the film still faces a massive hurdle of securing the Best Picture Oscar against the likes of Roma and Green Book.
In addition to its main gong, Black Panther also scooped the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble prize, ahead of fellow Marvel efforts Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Elsewhere, Rami Malek and Glenn Close both strengthened their Oscar chances with key wins in the lead acting categories.
Malek saw off the likes of Christian Bale (Vice) and Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) to win Leading Male Actor for his memorable portrayal of legendary singer Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
During his speech, Malek dedicated his award to Freddie, saying:
“I get some power from him that is about stepping up and living your best life; being exactly who you want to be and accomplishing everything you so desire. And I feel that, and he allows us all to feel that. So, this is for him.”
Close’s victory was just as crucial, as she overcame tough competition from Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) to clinch Leading Female Actor for her performance as unhappy wife Joan Castleman in the drama The Wife.
As things stand, this latest triumph leaves Close on the verge of a long overdue Oscar success.
Another contender looking dead set on a gold statuette is Mahershala Ali, as he picked up his second Supporting Male Actor gong in three years for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley in the fact-based comedy drama Green Book.
Finally, there was a surprise result in the Supporting Female Actor category, as Emily Blunt overcame Amy Adams (Vice) to prevail for her role as protective mother Evelyn Abbott in the post-apocalyptic horror A Quiet Place.
It was a fitting outcome for the British actress after she was completely ignored by the Academy for her performances in both this film, and Mary Poppins Returns.
Despite coming into last night’s ceremony with multiple nominations, BlackKklansman, The Favourite and A Star is Born all came away empty-handed.

Her win came at the expense of Emma Stone (Maniac) and Sharp Objects duo Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson.
Away from acting, Netflix’s GLOW enjoyed some success by winning the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize ahead of Daredevil, The Walking Dead and Westworld.
Finally, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to seasoned actor Alan Alda for his contributions to film and television over a number of decades with notable roles including M*A*S*H (1972-83), Same Time, Next Year (1978), The Four Seasons (1981), The Aviator (2004) and The West Wing (2004-06).
