BAFTA have made their mark on this year’s Oscar race as award season prepares to reach its climax.

After landing Golden Globe success last month, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s vengeance thriller The Revenant boosted its hopes of Best Picture glory by taking home five awards including Best Director and the coveted Best Film accolade.

Leading man Leonardo DiCaprio is all but certain to finally land his first Oscar after winning Best Actor for his physically-challenging role as explorer Hugh Glass while the film also collected Best Cinematography and Best Sound.

Leo’s former Titanic co-star Kate Winslet boosted her hopes of a second Academy Award after she beat off Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander to clinch Best Supporting Actress for the biopic drama Steve Jobs.

An absent Brie Larson also moved closer to her own inevitable Oscar win after securing the Best Actress gong for her powerful performance in Room while the Best Supporting Actor award went to British performer Mark Rylance for his role in Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies. His victory gives him a possible chance of overcoming category favourite Sylvester Stallone when the pair go head to head for the Oscar in a fortnight’s time.

Elsewhere, the action thriller Mad Max: Fury Road did well in the technical categories as it won four awards for Production Design, Costume Design, Editing and Makeup & Hairstyling. It was also a good night for Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the sci-fi blockbuster nabbed Best Visual Effects as well as a Rising Star Award triumph for actor John Boyega.

There were also wins for Spotlight (Original Screenplay), The Big Short (Adapted Screenplay), Brooklyn (Outstanding British Film), Inside Out (Animated Film), Amy (Documentary) and Wild Tales (Foreign Language Film) while veteran composer Ennio Morricone landed Best Film Music for his work on The Hateful Eight.

Finally, Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier was the recipient of this year’s BAFTA Fellowship award for his mesmerising work over the past six decades which included The Defiant Ones (1958), Lilies of the Field (1963), To Sir, With Love, Guess Whose Coming to Dinner and In the Heat of the Night (all 1967).
