Assassination of Gianni Versace and The Americans stand out amongst 2019 Golden Globe TV nominations

The best of television in 2018 has been recognised in today’s Golden Globe Awards lineup.

Leading the way is the FX show The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The series, which depicts the killing of renowned fashion designer Gianni Versace, scored four nods for Best Limited Series as well as acting mentions for Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz and Edgar Ramirez.

FX also gained extra plaudits for the retiring series The Americans which grabbed three nods for Best Drama as well as acting nominations for stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.

Elsewhere, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel continued its impressive haul of awards recognition with three nominations for Best Comedy Series, Best Actress in a Comedy for Rachel Brosnahan and Best Supporting Actress for Alex Borstein. Another Amazon series to perform well was the thriller Homecoming which landed a nod for Best Drama Series as well as acting mentions for Julia Roberts and Stephen James.

The BBC enjoyed a strong day with three of their hit series being lavished. Thrillers Bodyguard and Killing Eve are both shortlisted for Best TV Series (Drama) with stars Richard Madden and Sandra Oh mentioned in their respective categories. Coincidentally, Oh will be sharing hosting duties with Andy Samberg during the January ceremony.

The biopic mini-series A Very English Scandal also performed well with Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw both scoring acting nods along with its mention for Best Limited Series. Other Brits that made the acting lineups included Sacha Baron Cohen for the political satire Who is America?, Benedict Cumberbatch for the drama Patrick Melrose and Thandie Newton for HBO’s sci-fi/western Westworld.

A number of new shows were also acknowledged including the HBO thriller Sharp Objects which landed acting nominations for Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson. The same also applied for Netflix’s The Kominsky Method which also received double nods for actors Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.

Other major stars to land nominations included Jim Carrey (Kidding), Jason Bateman (Ozark), Donald Glover (Atlanta), Bill Hader (Barry), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Alison Brie (GLOW), Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso) and Henry Winkler (Barry).

There were a number of key snubs which included The Handmaid’s Tale being absent from Best TV Series (Drama) while there no mentions anywhere for Better Call Saul, Black-ish, Modern Family, Ray Donovan or This is Us.
