Anne Hathaway is the Grand High Witch in official trailer for The Witches remake

Back in 1990, Anjelica Huston terrified young audiences with her scary portrayal of the Grand High Witch in the fantasy adventure The Witches.

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, the film was well-received by critics but struggled to perform well at the box-office.

Thirty years on, a new cinematic adaption has been made with Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries, Les Misérables) tackling the lucrative role of the Grand High Witch.

Scheduled for release before the end of this frustrating year, the film’s trailer promises plenty of fun and peril for all involved….

Helmed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump), the story follows a young orphan who stumbles upon a secret coven of witches while staying with his grandmother. The boy then battles to stop the group and their leader (Hathaway’s Grand High Witch) from turning all the world’s children into mice.

Newcomer Jahzir Bruno (Atlanta, The Oath) plays our young hero with additional support coming from Octavia Spencer (The Help, The Shape of Water), Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones, Beauty and the Beast), Kristin Chenoweth (Glee, Bojack Horseman), Codie-Lei Eastick (Holmes & Watson) and Chris Rock (Madagascar series, Dolemite is My Name).

Additionally, the film has two renowned filmmakers on production duty in Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water) and Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Roma).

The Witches remake is set to arrive at HBO Max on October 22 though a UK release date is not yet known.
