Andy Serkis handles a darker adaptation of The Jungle Book in official trailer for Mowgli

A short while ago, Disney adapted one of their animated classics The Jungle Book into a live-action outing which received positive reviews and was a box-office smash.

Remarkably, Warner Bros. had been working on their own version of Rudyard Kipling’s classic at the same time in a case of pure coincidence. Unsurprisingly, this led to Warner’s film being delayed owing to the competition between both projects.

But the new outing, entitled Mowgli, is finally set for its cinematic release later this year and will be a darker take on Kipling’s tale.

Helmed by British actor / director Andy Serkis (Middle Earth saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), the film’s trailer is now available to view online.

The familiar story centres on a human child named Mowgli who is raised by wolves. However he soon finds himself having to confront a menacing tiger who is on the hunt for him.

Like the 2016 Jungle Book film, the voice cast for this project is just as star-studded with a number of talented names involved. Serkis will be providing the vocals of Baloo the Bear with teenager Rohan Chand (Lone Survivor, The Hundred-Foot Journey) tackling the lucractive role of Mowgli.

The rest of the starry voice ensemble includes Christian Bale (The Dark Knight trilogy, The Fighter) as Bagheera, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Avengers: Infinity War) as Shere Khan, Cate Blanchett (Middle Earth saga, Thor: Ragnorak) as Kaa, Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur, War Horse) as Akela, Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters, The Americans) as John Lockwood, Naomie Harris (Skyfall, Rampage) as Nisha, Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, Ray Donovan) as Vihaan, Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Sing Street) as Brother Wolf, Tom Hollander (Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Night Manager) as Tabaqui and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, Rise of the Planet of the Apes) as Mowgli’s mother.

With this film being more faithful to Kipling’s novel, there are NO songs used in this version which will certainly disappoint Disney fans but please the book readers!

There will be no ‘bare necessities’ on this occasion when Mowgli is released in the UK on October 19th.
