When it comes to the Academy Awards, Amy Adams and Glenn Close are currently seen as the two most prolific actresses in Hollywood yet to win a statuette.

The unlucky pair have been nominated for a combined thirteen Oscars between 1983 and 2019 but neither have reached that podium.

However, there is a chance of some momentum with their upcoming film Hillbilly Elegy which is being helmed by Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind).

Based on the No. 1 New York Times Bestseller by J.D. Vance, the Netflix drama’s official trailer is pure awards bait….something the Academy could eat up!

The film centres on the true story of Yale Law student Vance as he tries to navigate the complex dynamics of his Appalachian family. This includes his troubled relationship with his addict mother (Adams) and the memories he has of his supportive grandmother (Close).

Gabriel Basso (Super 8, The Big C) portrays Vance with additional casting support coming from Haley Bennett (The Equalizer, The Girl on the Train), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire, Guerilla), Dylan Gage (Stranger Things, PEN15), Bo Hopkins (American Graffiti, Midnight Express), Sunny Mabrey (Snakes On a Plane, In the Rough), Tierney Smith (The Vampire Diaries, MacGyver) and Owen Asztalos (Jessica Jones, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt).

For our main duo, Adams has been acknowledged six times by the Academy with nominated performances in Junebug (2005), Doubt (2008), The Fighter (2010), The Master (2013), American Hustle (2014) and Vice (2018).

As for Close, she was previously mentioned for her roles in The World According to Garp (1982), The Big Chill (1983), The Natural (1984), Fatal Attraction (1987), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Albert Nobbs (2011) and more recently, The Wife (2017).

Touted as another awards contender for Netflix, Hillbilly Elegy will stream on Netflix on November 24.
