Amour and The Master lead with seven nods each at London Film Critics Circle Awards

After the pacy release of the top three key awards precursors (BFCA, SAG and Golden Globes) last week, things have calmed a little for some of the films battling it out for Oscar glory. But with the BAFTAs due to announce their nominations next month, the London Film Critics Circle Awards (their smaller British-based awards group) have unveiled their nominees for 2012.

Two of the year’s unsettling yet critically acclaimed films, Michael Haneke’s Amour and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master both lead the way with seven mentions each. The pair of them received nods for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay with The Master gaining acting recognition for Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams whereas Amour gained its acting recognition for lead stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva.

The nominations saw some US critic favourites fall short with Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty failing to get mentioned in Best Film (though some of its actors were nominated) though Beasts of the Southern Wild (minus a Best Actress nod for youngster Quvenzhane Wallis) and Life of Pi both recovered some ground in the awards race with attention in that category. As predicted, Les Miserables secured nods for British Film of the Year as well as acting nominations for Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Samantha Barks.

Surprise attention was bestowed on Mads Mikkelsen’s role in The Hunt for Best Actor, Isabelle Huppert in Amour for Best Supporting Actress and most bizarre of all, Michael Fassbender in Prometheus for Best Supporting Actor.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Mayfair Hotel on January 20th, 2013. The full list of nominees are below.
