2013 Emmy Award nominations: American Horror Story and Game of Thrones take command

The nominations for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled.

In the drama line-ups, the third series of HBO’s fantasy epic Game of Thrones reigns supreme with a lucrative sixteen including the coveted Outstanding Drama Series where it competes against the likes of previous category winners Homeland and Mad Men, and Breaking Bad.

Once again, Peter Dinklage is shortlisted for Best Supporting Actor for his reprised role as Tyrion Lannister, while there is a first Emmy nod for Emilia Clarke in Best Supporting Actress for her iconic turn as Daenerys Targaryen. However, there were notable snubs for fellow co-stars like Michelle Fairley and Lena Headey.

Elsewhere, the first half of Breaking Bad’s fifth and final series scored multiple acting nominations for its cast, including repeat nods for Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn and a first mention for Jonathan Banks.

Meanwhile, Netflix’s American adaptation of the British series House of Cards made history by becoming the first streaming programme to receive an Outstanding Drama Series nomination.

The political drama also earned acting mentions for leading stars Kevin Spacey as ruthless politician Frank Underwood, and Robin Wright as his wife Claire.
