A Star is Born and Ozark top 2019 Screen Actor Guild Award nominations

With 2018 almost over, the battle for Oscar glory in 2019 is well and truly on following today’s Screen Actor’s Guild Award nominations.

Leader of the pack is the musical-based drama A Star is Born which landed four nods including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Additionally, stars Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Sam Elliott are all in contention for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively.

There are also three nominations apiece for the Spike Lee drama Blackkklansman and the historical biopic The Favourite. Blackkklansman scored a key mention in the Best Cast line-up as well as earning acting nods for John David Washington and Adam Driver.

The Favourite landed three acting nominations for actresses Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz though the film surprisingly missed out on being mentioned in the main category.

Instead, the Best Performance by a Cast line-up is completed by three box-office hits in the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther, the Asian-based rom-com Crazy Rich Asians and more unexpectedly, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

For his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, Rami Malek is once again in contention for Best Actor along with Christian Bale (Vice), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book), Cooper and Washington.

Elsewhere, British actress Emily Blunt earned two nominations in Lead and Supporting for her performances as Mary Poppins in the Disney musical Mary Poppins Returns and as Evelyn Abbott in the creepy drama A Quiet Place.

Blunt competes in the lead category along with the likes of Glenn Close (The Wife) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) while her competition in Supporting includes Amy Adams (Vice) and Margot Robbie (Mary, Queen of Scots).

The Supporting Actor line-up sees Driver, Elliott and Britain’s Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) go head-to-head with the likes of Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Timothee Chalamet (Beautiful Boy).

Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble category is contested by three Marvel films in Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp as well as The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

There were a number of surprise omissions with the biggest being Regina King who was snubbed in Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. First Man, First Reformed, Roma and Widows were the other major films ignored by the SAG.

The 25th Screen Actor’s Guild Awards ceremony will take place on 28th January.

Meanwhile, the nominees in television provided a solid mix in the drama, comedy and limited series categories.

Joint leader is the Netflix thriller series Ozark which landed four nominations including the lucrative Best Ensemble in a Drama Series category. It also received acting nods for stars Jason Bateman, Laura Linney and Julia Garner.

Ozark is competing in a strong Ensemble (Drama) Series line-up along with The Americans, Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale and This is Us.

In Best Actor (Drama), Bateman is up against Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), John Krasinski (Jack Ryan) and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).

Meanwhile the Best Actress (Drama) category sees Ozark duo Garner and Linney face off against Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

Another series to perform well was the 1950s comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which landed four mentions including Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Additionally, there are double nominations in Best Actress (Comedy) for Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein and a Best Actor (Comedy) nod for Tony Shalhoub.

Another comedy series to perform well was The Kominsky Method which is up for Best Ensemble (Comedy) as well as earning double acting mentions for stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. The rest of the Ensemble (Comedy) lineup is completed by Atlanta, Barry (also earning Bill Hader and Henry Winkler nominations in Best Actor) and GLOW (also nominated in Best Actress for Alison Brie).

Veterans Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin complete a versatile Best Actress group for their roles in Grace and Frankie.

In the limited series category, British actors Hugh Grant (A Very English Scandal) and Anthony Hopkins (King Lear) go head-to-head for the Best Actor award along with Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso), Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace) and Bill Pullman (The Sinner).

Amy Adams and Emma Stone lock horns in the Best Actress (Limited Series) category for their respective performances in HBO’s Sharp Objects and Netflix’s Maniac. Ironically, both women are also up against each in the Best Supporting Actress (film) lineup.

The rest of the nominees consist of Adams’s Sharp Objects co-star Patricia Clarkson as well as former Oscar winners Patricia Arquette (Escape at Donnemora) and Penelope Cruz (The Assassination of Gianni Versace).

Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble contenders consist of the recently-cancelled Daredevil as well as GLOW, Jack Ryan, The Walking Dead and Westworld.
