2019 BAFTA nominations: The Favourite gains favouritism with twelve nods

With the Golden Globes now out of the way, the Brits have contributed their group of contenders for the 2019 BAFTA Film Awards as the Oscar race intensifies.

Out in front is the historical biopic The Favourite which has a dominant twelve nominations including the lucrative Best Film and Outstanding British Film award.

The dramedy, which centres on an unlikely love-triangle between Queen Anne, her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill and servant girl Abigail Masham also received acting nominations for actresses Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz while director Yorgos Lanthimos is also recognised in his own category.

The joint-second most nods are shared between four films including the Mexican drama Roma and the music-based romance A Star is Born with seven mentions each including Best Film. Directors Alfonso Cuaron and Bradley Cooper go head-to-head in their own category which also includes surprise nominee Pawel Pawlikowski for the Polish drama Cold War.

The rest of the films competing in Best Film are the Spike Lee-directed drama Blackkklansman and the recent Golden Globe-winning comedy Green Book.

After its shock success at the Globes on Sunday, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody garnered seven nominations including Outstanding British Film while Rami Malek was recognised again in Best Actor for his portrayal of legendary singer Freddie Mercury.

Malek faces stern competition in his category from fellow Oscar contenders Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) plus Steve Coogan for his portrayal of beloved comedian actor Stan Laurel in the Laurel and Hardy biopic Stan & Ollie.

Meanwhile, the Best Actress lineup sees Olivia Colman up against fellow Globe winners Glenn Close (The Wife) and Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) as well as Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and surprise nominee Viola Davis (Widows).

In the supporting categories, British star Richard E. Grant is acknowledged in Best Supporting Actor for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? alongside Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Timothee Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) and Adam Driver (Blackkklansman) with last year’s winner Sam Rockwell also mentioned for Vice.

The Supporting Actress lineup sees Amy Adams receive a seventh nomination as she looks to finally win for her portrayal of Lynne Cheney in Vice. Her competition includes The Favourite’s Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz plus British star Claire Foy (First Man) and Australian beauty Margot Robbie (Mary Queen of Scots).

Alongside The Favourtie, Bohemian and Stan & Ollie, the rest of the Outstanding British Film category is completed by the documentary McQueen and thrillers Beast and You Were Never Really Here.

Other films that performed well in the technical categories included First Man, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The Best Animated Film lineup sees Marvel’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse battle it out with Pixar’s Incredibles 2 and the stop-motion animation Isle of Dogs. Finally, the powerful World War I documentary They Shall Not Grow Old is in contention for Best Documentary alongside the likes of Free Solo and McQueen.

After her Supporting Actress win at the Golden Globes, Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) was surprisingly overlooked by BAFTA alongside fellow Oscar contenders John David Washington (Blackkklansman), Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) and Sam Elliott (A Star is Born). The Marvel blockbuster Black Panther also underperformed with just one nomination for Visual Effects.

The 72nd BAFTA Film Awards will take place in London on February 10th with Joanna Lumley (darling) returning to host.
